CREATION

In addition to being physical, architecture is a process, through which the physical is created.

This process involves the cooperative and synergistic effort of the client, architect, the builder and craftspeople, who bring the ideas to life. It is this process that gives the building its soul. Though there may be similarities between one building and another, each project is unique and has its own idiosyncrasies and personality.

A building will give hints about its personality to the casual onlooker and whisper into the ears of its guest, but those involved in its creation will have the keys to its heart.

BEAUTY

We experience beauty with sight and touch, and also in thought. Architecture should be a delight for both the senses and the mind. It has an opportunity to truly affect and enhance our lives.

STRUCTURE

A building is an incredibly complex creature, perhaps a modest approximation of the human body. It is a symphony of a multitude of systems, all of which need to work together, as a harmonious whole, to achieve its maximum utility and beauty.

Its obvious systems include its structural skeleton, its plumbing and mechanical networks. Less visible systems embody the patterns of life developed by its inhabitants, systems like circulation and use patterns. Then there are elusive systems in which the building satisfies the user's sense of beauty, touch and memory.

Weaving all this together is a very complex, but equally fascinating and rewarding task.

MEMORY

Progress and history are not mutually exclusive. The forms in our memories are not frozen in time. They continue, endure and evolve as an integral aspect of modern life. Ancient and modern, they will be part of our architecture.

Our memories are not superfluous. They help remind us of what it is to be human.
